What is Full HD Resolution?

What is Full HD?

Full HD, or Full High Definition, is a widely used display resolution standard that gives a clear picture. You’ll find it in TVs, computer monitors, laptops and mobile devices. Understanding Full HD will help when choosing a display or media content for the best viewing.

Full HD is a display resolution of 1920 pixels horizontally by 1080 pixels vertically, often written as 1920 x 1080 or simply 1080p.

The “p” stands for progressive scan, which means the image is refreshed every frame, so smoother motion and better clarity, especially in fast-moving scenes.

Full HD vs Other Resolutions

HD (720p) vs Full HD (1080p)

  • HD (720p): 1280 x 720 pixels
  • Full HD (1080p): 1920 x 1080 pixels

Full HD has over twice the pixels of standard HD, so sharper images and more detail.

Full HD vs 4K (Ultra HD)

  • Full HD: 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • 4K (Ultra HD): 3840 x 2160 pixels

4K has four times the resolution of Full HD, but Full HD is popular because it’s cheaper and more compatible with content and devices.

Benefits

  • Sharp image quality: For everyday use, streaming, gaming and work.
  • Widespread support: Most content, from streaming services to video games, is available in Full HD.
  • Efficient performance: Compared to higher resolutions like 4K, Full HD is less demanding on hardware and bandwidth.
  • Cost-effective: Generally cheaper than higher resolution displays.

Where to Use It

  • TVs: Most mid-range TVs support Full HD, so it’s a good choice for home entertainment.
  • Monitors: Popular for office use, content creation and casual gaming.
  • Laptops: Many laptops use Full HD displays for a balance of quality and battery life.
  • Streaming and video content: Platforms like Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime stream in 1080p.
  • Home cinema systems (indoor and outdoor)
  • Video distribution systems

Full HD (1920 x 1080) is a great all-rounder. 4K is coming, but Full HD is a tried and tested resolution for many devices and applications.
