Tips for energy saving in the office
Save money, protect the planet — lower your office emissions
There’s a lot to think about when you’re running a business — building your team, attracting new customers, maximising profits, and streamlining your costs. And juggling so many types of expenditure is a full-time job of its own. But what if we told you that you could lower your emissions, preserve our planet, and save a fortune by simply using energy a little more wisely?
The bright idea
While you might not realise it, the lights around your office consume huge amounts of energy. Don’t worry, we’re not going to suggest that you work in the dark. Instead, we’ll help you to use those lights only when you need them, lowering their costs when you don’t, and you’ll be a step closer to a greener business as a bonus.
Harvesting daylight
While we can’t grow natural light, we can harness existing sunlight to illuminate your office for free — in the building controls industry, we call it daylight harvesting, and it could save you up to 60% on your lighting costs. We’ll install an array of cost-effective sensors throughout your building, each one measuring the daylight in its respective room, and adjusting the light levels accordingly. This means dimming lights in well-sunlit rooms, turning them up in areas that are too dark, and switching them off completely when they’re not needed.
So what happens when the sun is too bright? What about the times that it causes glare on computer screens, and shines straight in the eyes of the hapless person sitting facing the window? You’re covered there too. We can install automatic blinds that save the entire office from sun-induced headaches by shutting out the light when levels are too high, triggering your energy-efficient artificial lights to take over.
Smart switching
A more common but still underused method of saving energy is to turn off the lights when leaving the room. We know that’s easier said than done, and getting everybody to remember can be a challenge. That’s why we’d install intelligent motion sensors by Lutron that continuously check to make sure there are people in the area. If everyone’s gone, after a few minutes, the lights will go out, automatically switching on when somebody returns. And you can set a timer too, so the lights go off, and stay off, between specific times. This provides the ultimate light-management convenience in busy shared offices.
Saving energy in the office doesn’t only reduce your electricity bills, but contributes a lot to the environment by lowering carbon pollution. Not to mention that going green improves your company’s reputation, and has amazing positive effects on your company’s image and brand.
